Amber Benson and Christopher Golden created GHOSTS OF ALBION as an online animated series for the BBC, and it has now evolved into a brand new series of novels for Del Rey, and a soon to be released role playing game from Eden Studios. Who says making a fool out of yourself in public doesn't pay off? As a result of Soares' appearance as Cornelius the Ape Boy at World Horror 2005's Gross-Out Contest, Soares was asked to contribute a story to an upcoming chapbook focusing on humorous horror.

The official line-up includes Soares, Mark McLaughlin, and Steve Vernon. The chapbook will be called RIGHT HOUSE ON THE LEFT and will be published by Novello Publishers, run by Nick Cato. Meanwhile, Golden and Amber Benson's first GHOSTS OF ALBION novel, ACCURSED, hits the week of Halloween. Benson and Golden are more than halfway through the second one, GHOST SONATA.

Rare Pulp Horror Swag For Sale from Necronomicon Press

Rhode Island's Necronomicon Press has uncovered a number of out-of-print publications which, for the most part, were returns from dealers and bookstores. Some are slightly damaged, others are like new.

F. Brett Cox Sale to "The Third Alternative"

Lots of News From Rick Hautala

Hautala's latest novel written as A.J. Matthews, FOLLOW, is completed and delivered. The book is due to be released in October 2005. He has also started work on his fourth A.J. Matthews book tentatively titled CROSSROADS.

Rick has delivered his latest short story collection, OCCASIONAL DEMONS, to CD Publications. All artwork for this book comes from the masterful hand of Glenn Chadbourne. CD Publications hopes to have the collection released for this summer.

UNTCIGAHUNK: THE COMPLEE LITTLE BROTHERS (most likely title) will be released in a special limited edition from Delerium Press in December 2005. Along with the original novel, this book will include five short stories and three myths about the creatures featured in this book.

Hautala also reports that a major studio has shown interest in filming FOLLOW. "At this point, the negotiations are in the works," says Hautala. "All I can say is that they're very interested, and if the deal goes through, I’ll announce it right away. Of course, I would be thrilled to have a film made of one of my books, and I honestly think FOLLOW might be the one that will work." Also, LAND OF NOD, a film adaptation of the Mark Clemens book of the same name, is making the rounds in Hollywood. Hautala collaborated with Bill Relling on this script.

In other collaboration news, Hautala has signed with Dark Horse to co-write an original CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON novel with with Christopher Golden. That book should be released sometime in 2006.

Jon F. Merz - Tons of Updates!!!

Merz has launched VANGUARD PUBLICITY, a new business devoted to author publicity. Vanguard will launch with bestselling author Douglas Clegg as our premiere interviewee.

Merz's website, www.zrem.com, will be defunct in about two weeks, and will be replaced by www.jonfmerz.com. The new site is under construction right now. To help launch, Merz will offer his never-before-published novel VICARIOUS on the site, along with some other cool bells & whistles.

Merz reports that he's seen some of the artwork for the first issue of THE FIXER comic series. "Lawson looks great and I'm incredibly happy to be working with such a talented team of professionals," says Merz. This is the comic that ships free with THE KENSEI special edition. Books 6-8 in the Lawson Vampire series have now been outlined. Book 6 will be called THE RIPPER. Book 7 will be called THE WRAITH and book 8 will be THE HUNTER. "I expect to do a deal for all eight as audiobooks in the Fall," reports Merz.

About a year ago, Merz put together a proposal for a reality TV series called BESTSELLER, in which two teams of midlist authors who haven't "broken out" vie for a chance to win a million dollar publishing deal while criss-crossing the country on a booksigning junket and engaging in challenges. According to Merz, the proposal didn't meet with much enthusiasm then, but then his agent sent Merz a press release about another reality series titled "Book Millionaire." Merz & his agent dove in again and the project is now with the head of the television division at THE FIRM, a blockbuster Los Angeles entertainment company. "Nothing's ever definite until the ink dries on the contract, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed," says Merz. "If nothing else, it helps spread my name a little bit more out in Hollywood."

And last, but not least, DANGER-CLOSE could go into a third printing soon.

Horror / fantasy author Douglass Clegg has launched a new promotion to help spread the word about his upcoming novel, THE PRIEST OF BLOOD, a medieval vampire fantasy due for release this fall in trade hardcover. This is book one in a new series from Clegg.

Golden & Sniegoski's OUTCAST To Be Adapted To Film

According to Variety Magazine, Universal Studios plans to adapt the Christopher Golden and Thomas Sniegoski OUTCAST to film.

Charlie Mitchell(who wrote CINDERELLA MAN starring Russell Crowe) will write the script. The third OUTCAST book, GHOSTFIRE, was released in April 2005, and Book #4, WURM WAR, will land in bookstores in September 2005.

The play is set in the deep South (Louisiana and Mississippi) and features a musical mix of folk, blues, jazz, Cajun, and zydeco. King and Mellencamp have been working on this project since 2001.

Marchand Wins Award at WHC 2005!

Merz's DANGER-CLOSE Goes Back for Another Printing

HWA NE member Jon F. Merz reports that his mystery/thriller DANGER-CLOSE, released in December from FiveStar Mysteries, has gone back for another print run due to high demand. This first installment of a new series stars paraplegic ex-USAF commando Jake Thunder, once wounded in Somalia who now hangs his shingle out as a private eye in Boston while battling alcoholism and hoping his acupuncture treatments revive his dead legs.

Kirkus Reviews said it, "..manages to be both gritty and cheeky with an effective surprise twist." Merz's agent is currently shopping subrights while the author works on a second installment entitled DOUBLE-TAP.

Five Star Books published Don D'Ammassa's mystery novel, MURDER BY SILVERPLATE, in November.

Vicki Sanders, recently promoted Quality Control Manager at Standard Silver, reports to work one day only to discover the Production Manager murdered. A few days later, the company president is found dead. Detective Walter Henderson, Vicki's father, begins his investigation. Soares wrote this story in college 20 years ago! It it also the first story he ever sold, but the magazine went closed before they could publish it. Desperation Movie Update from Stephen King

Desperation is now being produced as a feature movie (not a miniseries) for ABC (no air date yet). It is currently being filmed in Arizona. Mick Garris, whose previous Stephen King projects include Riding the Bullet, The Stand, The Shining, Quicksilver Highway [Chattery Teeth], and Sleepwalkers, wrote the screenplay and is directing this production. Cast members include:

Following the success of their first adventure, magical siblings William and Tamara Swift return to bbc.co.uk this Autumn in "Ghosts of Albion: Embers", the latest adventure from BBC Interactive Drama and Entertainment.

The second installment of the Prix Europa-nominated drama begins on the 1st November 2004, starring BBC Carlton Hobbs award-winner Jasmine Hyde as Tamara and Rory Kinnear (Second Coming) as William as they battle zombies, necromancers and demon monkeys in the quest to find the pieces of a mystical artifact scattered across the globe!

As well as being able to watch six new episodes, fans across Britain will be invited to take part in a treasure hunt to win the golden crown, as featured in the story. A kind of Da Vinci code with demons, the treasure hunt has been developed in association with Britain's foremost 'enigmatologist', Chris Maslanka. Visitors to the site will be asked to solve a series of puzzles to discover the location of five crown pieces.

"Ghosts of Albion: Embers" has been co-written by the original team of Amber Benson and Christopher Golden. Benson is best known to Cult fans as Tara in the hit TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She was also the writer, director and producer of the award-winning independent film "Chance" and is currently working on a second feature. Christopher Golden is the L.A. Times best-selling author of such novels as "The Ferryman" and "Strangewood" as well as a Bram Stoker Award winner.

"As usual, working with the BBC has been a wonderful pleasure," said Benson. "Chris and I were delighted that we could bring our internet fans the next installment of the Ghost's saga. I think that "Embers" will be even better than our last effort."

"From the moment we finished recording the first Ghosts of Albion serial, Amber and I have been itching to get round to the next one," added Chris. "'Embers' takes Tamara and William around the world, introduces new characters and deepens the mythology of the series. John D. Harvey To Co-Chair HWA New England

Rhode Island horror author John D. Harvey has taken over as co-chair of HWA New England (HWA NE) at the request of Daniel Keohane of Boston, MA.

Harvey is the HWA NE's current webmaster. In addition to those duties, he will work with HWA NE Co-Chair Michael Arruda to coordinate chapter activities including book signings, con / event appearances, library engagements, and more.
